Robert Karl Hellmers, 90, of Honesdale, PA, died at home on August 12, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, the former Joyce Hawley. Born on March 21, 1932, in Equinunk, Pa, he was the son of the late Karl and Marion Hellmers. He attended Hancock Central School and was a member of St Joseph's Church in Rileyville.
Robert was a dairy farmer for 30 years. Wanting to learn how to be a good farmer, he was a milk tester traveling throughout the county, gaining knowledge from the best farmers in the area. His learning paid off when he was awarded the Pennsylvania Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1967, having sold cattle throughout the USA, Russia, France and Spain. He was the Township Supervisor in Manchester Township for 15 years, served on the board of directors for the Wayne County Conservation Office, and was the founder of the Tri-GAL 4H club. Many people will remember Bob Hellmers as their bus driver. He drove for Wayne Highlands School District for over 35 years.
The joy of his life was his family, in which he took great pleasure beating playing cards. His children are Edward Hellmers (Stephanie), Arthur Hellmers (Kathleen), Linda Haynes, and Lisa Burcher (Terry). Grandchildren Marcia Bettis (Jimmy), Steven Hellmers (Jennifer), Sarah Kate Daly (James), Matthew Hellmers (Tara), Becky Ellis (Brad), Elizabeth Doyle (Dan), Timothy Hellmers (Cassie), Jacob Haynes (Elizabeth), Kaitlin Haynes (Owen), Samuel Burcher and bonus grandchildren Marissa and Joshua Johannes. Great grandchildren, Ashley Ateca (Isaac), Kathleen Ridge (Jackson), Benjamin Stead, Hailey Doyle, Eamon Daly, Elizabeth Ellis, Patrick Daly, Abigail Ellis, Emma Doyle, Adalynn Doyle, Emory Hellmers, Waylon Hellmers, and Olivia Hellmers, and bonus great grandchildren Austin Adams, Blake Bettis, and Lila Bettis. Great-great-grandchildren, Robert Jude Ateca, and Thomas James Ateca. His beloved dachshund Wrinkles will truly miss Robert.
A private graveside service will be held at the family's convenience. In lieu of sending flowers, Memorial donations can be made to Tri-GAL 4H club, 133 Galilee Road, Tyler Hill, Pa 18469.
