Richard A. “Dick” Murphy, 85, of Prompton died peacefully on Friday morning, February 16, 2024 at Geisinger Community Medical Center with family members by his side following a sudden illness. His beloved wife, Jan (Leech) Murphy preceded him in death on December 16, 1999.
Born on August 17, 1938 in Orson, he was the son of the late Raymond C. and Margarete (Patton) Murphy. Dick grew up on the family farm among the northern Wayne County farming community. He graduated from Preston High School in 1955. Dick later attended Penn State University where he earned certificates as a blacksmith and farrier. From there he embarked on a lifetime career that spanned 65 years. Refusing to even consider retirement, he shod his last horse less than a month ago. With his cowboy hat, boots, and a cheerful demeanor, he was loved by all who knew him. A man of integrity and personal responsibility, he served as Prompton Borough Constable for more than 50 years.
Dick is survived by his children: Richard A. Murphy II of Orson, Raejean Robinson of Florida, Sam Murphy of Prompton, and several grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. A celebration of Dick’s life will be held sometime in the future, to be determined by his family.
