Mildred Lenora Zeigler Anderson went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 9, 2018. Born on February 26, 1922, in New Castle, PA, to Harvey and Blanche Black Zeigler, she was the youngest of seven children, and the last survivor of her parents and siblings. Her sisters were Violet, Dorothy, and Ruby; her brothers were Wilbur, Merle, and Walter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Anderson, in 2014.
Mildred is survived by two children: Dennis Anderson of Londonderry, NH, and Carol Harris of Honesdale, PA. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Carrie, Tracy, David and Heather. Surviving also are seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Guthrie and husband, Jack of Youngstown, OH, and also many nieces and nephews.
Mildred graduated as the valedictorian of her class of 1940 at Shenango High School in New Castle, PA. She then attended Practical Bible Training School in Johnson City, NY. She married Dwight Anderson on February 22, 1946, and lived in Chicago, IL, while her husband went to Moody Bible Institute. Millie worked at Scripture Press during that time.
As a pastor's wife, Millie was a great help to her husband's ministry. She taught Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School, led the church choir and Women's Bible Study and helped with Awana and Baptist Youth Fellowship. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality, and loved to host gatherings in her home.
After retirement from Aldenville Baptist and Clinton Center Baptist Churches, Millie and her husband moved from Aldenville, PA back to their birthplace of New Castle, PA where she was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church.
Millie loved music, and taught herself to play many instruments, including piano, trumpet, harmonica, autoharp, accordion, and her favorite, the saxophone, which she played every Sunday morning at church. She also had a strong, beautiful alto voice, and harmonized without written music.
Millie was a remarkable grandmother. She was kind and caring, who devoted time and energy to her grandchildren, and sewed, cooked, rode bikes, and took walks with them. She had an infectious laugh, and a playful sense of humor, warming the hearts of those who had the pleasure to know and love her.
Her family would like to honor her memory by celebrating her life with music at the Harmony Baptist Church at 4103 Ellwood Road, New Castle, PA 16101, at 1 pm on Saturday, December 15th. Visitation will be at the church from 12 pm to 1 pm the same day. The speaker will be retired Pastor James Hockenberry.
Interment will be private, in Graceland Cemetery, 261 Cemetery Lane, New Castle, PA 16105.
