Maria A. Baldwin, 96, of Honesdale, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon June 15, 2023 at Serenity Care of Mid-Valley in Peckville, PA. Her beloved husband, George L. Baldwin preceded her in death in 1987.
The daughter of Italian immigrants, Rapheal and Vincenza (Conte) Mammone, she was born June 3, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, where she grew up with eight siblings.
After graduating from high school, she went on to earn an Associate's Degree and in 1950, she enlisted in the United States Marines, breaking many barriers for women of her day. She rose to the rank of Sergeant and was Honorably Discharged in 1954. Afterwards, she worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where she was a Mechanical Draftsman for the United States Department of Defense. It was there that she met the love of her life, George Baldwin.
Maria and George raised a family of three children in the suburbs of Long Island, with the neighborhood children always around because of the fun times and love from Mrs. B. Later in life her grandchildren's friends were always around enjoying the same love and fun Maria shared with everyone.
She had a gentle soul and instilled the gift of compassionate love upon everyone she interacted with. Maria will be remembered for her kindness and generosity and how she gave of herself to charitable causes. She was a woman of gratitude and grace in the lives of everyone she encountered. Her life in this world was a light to others, and she will never be forgotten, but always remembered with love.
Maria is survived by three children: Donnamarie (Kevin Stehn), Michael (Annette) and Margaret Allen; five grandchildren: Michael Baldwin Jr.(Rosa) Nicholas Baldwin (Angela), James Baldwin, Joseph Allen Jr.(Emily) and Carleen Runco (Christopher) ; one great-grandson, Mason Allen; a sister, Anna McLean of Texas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday evening, July 21, 2023 at 6:00 PM in St. Mary's Church, 242 Carbondale Road, Waymart, PA 18472.
The family will receive friends and relatives in St. Mary's Church from 4-6 PM on Friday, July 21.
Interment will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island New York.
In lieu of flowers, please devote some time to volunteer in your local community as Maria always loved to do or donate to a charity of your choice in Maria's memory.
