Joanne L. Sullivan, 93, of Hawley, passed away on Monday morning, September 18, 2023 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. Her husband, Donald F. Sullivan preceded her in death.
Born June 12, 1930 in Wilmington, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Lottie Ruth (Grimes) Johnston.
Throughout her youth, Joanne and her family lived in Cape May, New Jersey, which was her favorite place on earth, and it was there that she graduated from high school. She went on to work at Philco, an American electronics manufacturer, headquartered in Philadelphia, PA., where she met Donald and they were soon married. They were blessed with a love-filled relationship and marriage of 55 years.
Joanne was a woman of deep Christian faith and found fulfillment in serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout her life. While raising their family, Joanne and Donald were members of the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church where Joanne served as a Deacon, and volunteered for delivering Meals on Wheels. Later in life, while living in Lancaster County, she was an active member of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church in Quarryville. She enjoyed being a part of the "church circle (women's bible study)," and was especially fond of her church family.
Joanne loved making crafts to share with others. She was an especially talented quilter of numerous beautiful quilts, and was so grateful to have shared this gift in teaching her granddaughter, Becca. Joanne and Don, while in their fifties, rode across the country; Don on a ten speed bike, and Joanne on a Yammahopper Moped. Joanne will be remembered for her quiet spirit, her love of family, and her green thumb, which showed in the beautiful flower gardens she nurtured each year.
Joanne is survived by three sons: Kenneth Sullivan and his wife Gwen of Gap, PA, Daniel Sullivan and his wife Lisa of Phoenixville, PA, and Richard Sullivan and his wife Judy of Hawley, PA; six grandchildren: Jack, Molly, Emma, Owen, Victoria, and Rebecca; and nine great-grandchildren: Olivia, Liam, Finn, Carter, Abraham, Zephaniah, Solomon, John, and Harper.
She was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Geraldine Woll; and her brother, Kenneth Johnston.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at the South Canaan Free Methodist Church, 19 St. Tikhon's Road, South Canaan with Joanne's daughter-in-law, Pastor Judy Sullivan officiating.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date, and will be held at the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, followed by interment at the Middle Octorara Cemetery, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, PA 17566.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joanne's memory to Ronald Mc Donald House in Danville, PA., and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Arrangements and cremation are entrusted to Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc. Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. www.HowellFamilyFuneralHome.com
