Joan E. Coons

Joan E. Coons, 90, of Waymart, died Friday afternoon, March 3, 2023 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Donald R. Coons, in September of 2010. Born on October 21, 1932 in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Parke Atkins and Mary E. (Vernier) Atkins. Joan and Donald lived in Waymart most of their married life, and raised their children there. She worked at Waymart Knitwear where she was a garment tacker for many years prior to her retirement. After Donald's passing, Joan started a new chapter of her life at Laurel Place Apartments on South Street in Waymart where she loved making new friends and enjoyed many outings, crafts, and music. More than anything, Joan loved her family and cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. The last five years of her life were spent at Allied Services Skilled Nursing in Scranton. Joan's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the amazing care and comfort she was provided. She is survived by two sons, Thomas and wife Lisa, and Kurt and wife Diane, all of Waymart; two daughters, Julie Swingle and husband David, Hawley; and Karen Matoushek and husband Karl, Waymart; six grandchildren, Lyndsey Matoushek and her companion Jeff Roth, Elijah Matoushek, Sara VanLeuven and her husband Bradley, Kyle Coons, Parker Coons, and Evan Coons; a great-granddaughter, Norah VanLeuven; several sisters; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Eric Coons; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte VanLeuven. Funeral Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners.
