Irmgard A. Nehring, 92, a resident at Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, formerly of Clinton Township, Wayne County, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, January 28, 2025. Her beloved husband of 46 years, Otto Nehring preceded her in death on April 12, 2001.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Herbert Hunke and his wife Herta; and her sister, Ruth Dettenberg and her husband Rudolf.
Irmgard is survived by her son, Roger W. Nehring and his wife Elise of Malvern, PA; four grandsons, Roger Nehring and his daughter Adelynn Elise, Matthew Nehring and his wife Amy, David Nehring, and Mitchell Nehring; and several nieces and nephews.
Born July 6, 1932 in Letmathe, Germany, Irmgard was the daughter of the late Friedrich and Maria (Schulte) Hunke.
In 1956, Irmgard and Otto immigrated to America (crossing the Atlantic Ocean on the grand oceanliner, the S.S. United States) settling first in Elizabeth, NJ where they met many lifelong friends. Learning the English language at night-school and exploring their new country were part of her fond memories of the late 1950s and early 1960s. During those years, Irmgard worked at the former Burry Biscuit Corp. in Elizabeth which was a significant baker and packager for Girl Scout Cookies.
From 1966 to 1990, Irmgard and Otto lived in Marlboro Twp., NJ. While primarily a homemaker during those years, she also worked at the Battleview Orchards in Freehold, NJ where she baked the popular and delicious apple cider donuts.
In 1969, Irmgard and Otto purchased the land on Ravnikar Road which they would later build their final home together. For many years, they enjoyed traveling to Wayne County from their New Jersey home until they settled in Pennsylvania permanently in 1990 upon their retirement.
Irmgard was very active in her community especially as a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale where she supported various mission projects and activities of the congregation; she was involved in the Needles for Needs program there and found fulfillment in knitting items for those truly in need. Each year, she looked forward to the German Christmas service at St. John's were she led the readings in the German language.
Irmgard was a member of the Waymart Seniors Club for many years. She also belonged to the German-American Club of Honesdale where she enjoyed the company of many friends. She was proud of her German heritage and enjoyed many dinners and Oktoberfests at the Alpine Restaurant!
Irmgard was first and foremost a loving and devoted wife and mother, and later also a doting and loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Many, but especially her grandsons, fondly remember the delicious cookies, pies, tapioca pudding, waffles and pancakes she always made. However, her legacy is that of a person who loved and cared for her family dearly.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Irmgard's memory to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 107 7th Street, Honesdale, PA 18431.
Arrangements are entrusted to Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. www.HowellFamilyFuneralHome.com
