Henry Griswold Curtis, Jr, 89, passed away on October 11, 2022, at home in Waymart, PA. Henry was born March 12, 1933, in Honesdale, PA, to the late Henry G. Curtis, Sr. and Grace Avery (Schweighofer) Curtis. He married Susanna K. Lopatofsky on September 28, 1957, at St. Mary’s Church in Waymart, and this fall they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Upon graduating from Pleasant Mount High School in Pleasant Mount, PA, Henry worked spreading cinders and lime as a truck driver for GLF/Agway before operating a dairy farm in Waymart until his retirement at the age of 87. A lifelong member of the farming community, “Hank” devoted his life to the care of his family’s farm and was a staunch supporter of the dairy industry, often declaring that farming was THE most important industry in the country as it feeds the people. “Try going without a meal for a day or two, then you will realize the important work done by farmers,” was one of his favorite sayings. Hank was a delegate member of Farm Bureau, Agway, and DFA, participating in all meetings to advance the concerns of the dairy industry.
Hank was known to his family and friends for his hard work, determination, steadfast character, and deep-rooted love for agriculture. Those who met him throughout his life almost always heard of his cows, his hay, his farmland, the weather, or his corn crop. He also spoke fondly of his days of competitive cross-cut sawing and playing baseball for Pleasant Mount High School with his life-long friend Clarence “Bus” Turner, a companion of many car trips. Hank enjoyed sports, driving through the fertile countryside, and eating his wife’s home-cooked meals.
Henry is survived by his wife, Susanna “Sue” Curtis; his children Christopher and his wife Diane, Matthew and his wife Mary Ann, Daniel, Paul and his wife Nancy, Teresa (Curtis) Fleming and her husband Brian, Michael, and Stephen and his wife Susan; his grandchildren Jonathan, Ashley, Rachel, Jacob, Elizabeth, Adam, Zachary, Ryan, Samantha, Cassandra, Erika, Amy, Amber, Luke, Austin, Gregory, Alexander, and Nickolas, as well as several great-grandchildren; and his brother, Charles D.
