Gregory Celeskey

Gregory Thomas Celeskey, 77, of Honesdale, passed away on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. His wife of 53 years, the former Cheryl Ashby, survives him.

Born in Detroit, MI to the late Thomas and Florence (Onichimowski) Celeskey, he attended St. Monica's Elementary School in Detroit prior to training at Divine Heart Seminary in Donaldson, IN. Furthering his education, he graduated from Kilroe Seminary and later pursued graduate studies in Computer Science at East Stroudsburg University.

Greg was a caseworker for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance for 37 years, retiring as the Executive Director for Wayne County. He felt work with the Job Training Program was a particularly meaningful aspect of his career.

Active in the community, Greg was an Assistant Scoutmaster and Badge Counselor for Boy Scouts and volunteered for many other organizations including: the Honesdale Elementary PTA/Block Parent Committee, Girl Scouts, Honesdale Emergency Pantry, and the Honesdale Planning Commission. He also served terms as Council President and Financial Secretary for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In addition to his wife, Gregory is survived by their children, Matthew and Roxanne Witt Celeskey, Carrie Celeskey, and Emily and Brian Hugenbruch, and beloved granddaughter, Elinor Hugenbruch. Also surviving are his sisters: Diane Byrnes, Judy (Roger) Avie, Rose (William) Stano, and Mary (Francis) Tseng, sister-in-law: Gwen Ashby (Jeffrey) Abromovitz, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Jerry Lyons and James Byrnes.
