George A. Piercy, 91, of Seelyville, died Wednesday morning, July 19 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale after an illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, the former Mary Nancy Schott of South Canaan, PA.
Born in Bethany, PA on July 4, 1932 he was the son of Lorenzo Franklin Fowler Piercy and Florence Klenck Piercy. He attended Honesdale High School, Class of 1951. Served in the United States Army and received several awards. His length of service was at the Pentagon of Europe in Frankfort, Germany with the Signal Corps. Following the military he worked at S.J. Bailey & Sons, YUBA Industries, and 34 years at Edw. J. Schwarz Inc.
George was very involved in his community and church. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist and Central United Methodist Churches, where he was a certified lay speaker and held many official positions in the churches. He was a leader in the Seelyville Union Sunday School for over 40 years not including the time he spent there in his childhood. After the Chapel building was sold he continued the Sunday School program in his home for 5 additional years.
He was a very active member in the Wayne County Camp of Gideons International. He spoke at many churches throughout Wayne and Lackawanna counties presenting the Gideons message and delivering hundreds of Bibles. In 1996 he traveled to Estonia for a mission trip with his brother in law, Patrick Schott. While there he was able to visit Russia including Moscow. For over 22 years he delivered Meals on Wheels in Wayne County through the Area Agency on Aging. He volunteered for VIP delivering flowers during their annual sales events. George enjoyed snowplowing and mowing lawns for over 40 years around the Seelyville area, picked up roadside debris for Keep America Beautiful, donated blood every year while he was able, and never missed an election until this year.
A very active member of the Seelyville Volunteer Fire Company since age 16 to retirement at age 80. George held every office in the organization - from sweeping the floor to fire chief. In 2011 he responded to 145 calls with the fire department as driver of the tanker and rescue trucks. For many years he planned and presented the Fire Prevention Program to area children and trained future firefighters thru Fire School. He spearheaded the committee to erect a memorial at the fire hall for Seelyville veterans killed in action. He helped to clean up after major flooding events in 1942, 1955, and 1972 in the Honesdale area as well as Port Jervis and Matamoras.
He was never too busy to stop what he was doing and go help another.
In addition to his wife he is survived by sister in law Lillian Piercy and brother in law Bill Schutt, and numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember “Uncle George”. He was preceded in death by his parents, by brothers Michael Piercy and Franklin Piercy, and his sisters, Arlene Hiller Seig and Mary Etta Schutt.
