George D. Knickerbocker

George Knickerbocker of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, died on November 13, 2021, at the age of 75, but his loyalty to his family and community and trademark stubbornness will not be forgotten. He was born on July 8, 1946, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest son of the late Frank D. Knickerbocker and Doris Arthur Knickerbocker. Lovingly known as Pop to his family, he worked for the local water company for 14 years before taking a leap of faith in 1983 and opening Knickerbocker Painting and KML Taxidermy. He was always pointing out all of the beautiful homes of Honesdale that he painted and took pride in his Taxidermy business named after his three beautiful daughters Kari, Marci, and Lori. George was a proud Navy Seabees Veteran serving from 12, November 1965 - 11, May 1969. He was stationed in Rhode Island Merganser. During his military career, he spent time in New Zealand, the South Pole, and Chu Lai, Vietnam alongside some of his lifetime friends including the late Bud Jennings. He noted his appreciation and friendship with Lynn Simons who always made the trip to visit him any time he made it back to base in Rhode Island. In the early years, he was a die-hard drag racer with his lifelong friend Bob Reisch. On occasion, you could see him getting pulled over by the state police testing out his souped-up Super Bee on Grandview Ave by B and B Dodge. He was honored to be a Past Master of the Masons and a member of the Shriners. He served the Central United Methodist Church as a Lead Usher for many years and later enjoyed the simplicity of the intimate Sunday services of Smith Hill United Methodist Church. He was a seasoned outdoorsman, hobby photographer with his good friend Dave Sote, chili cookoff champion with his buddy Jeff Hiller, and retirement cooking connoisseur. His kitchen appliance of choice hands down will always be his air fryer. He took great pride in keeping his trucks immaculate and always freshly washed. In the summers you could catch him riding his motorcycle and in the winters he’d be staring at it in the comfort of his heated shop. Most recently he found daily enjoyment in his chats with his brother Art and good buddy Bill Ripple. George leaves behind his faithful wife and caregiver of 50 years, Susan Mulally Knickerbocker. His brother and sister-in-law, Art and Sharon Knickerbocker. George and Sue were grateful to share three daughters who grew their family with 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Todd and Kari Canfield with their five children- Kaelin, Gavin, Olivia, Lauren, and Madison, one son-in-law- Ethan, and granddaughter- Charlotte. Jerry and Marci Jones with their two children, Alexa and Samuel. Lori Knickerbocker with her two children, Emma and Evan, and one son-in-law, Dakota. George also leaves behind his steadfast lapdog, Princess Daisy. Also left behind are his brother-in-law’s and their families, Dennis and Danielle Mulally with their children Joey and Anique, and Dale and Carolyn Pepper. Niece RickiLynn Altemier Derrick and family. He was preceded in death by his in-laws Gerard and Ruth Pepper, sister-in-law Linda Altemier, and nephew Scott Gavin. A visitation and funeral services for friends and family will be held at the Smith Hill United Methodist Church, 285 Smith Hill Road, Honesdale, on Friday, November 19th, 2021 with Rev. Lloyd Canfield officiating. The visitation will begin at 9:30 am with the funeral to follow at 11 am with Masonic Services in the church on Friday. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Smith Hill Cemetery on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Smith Hill United Methodist Church or the Central United Methodist Church would be greatly appreciated.
