Andrew S. Cavage, 91, of the Village of Steene, Canaan Township passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 2, 2022 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, after an illness. His beloved wife of more than 64 years, the former Barbara Schott survives him. They were married on September 21, 1957.
Born September 3, 1930 in South Canaan, he was the son of the late Frank and Lucy (Fox) Cavage.
Andy graduated from Waymart High School in 1948 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force until his Honorable Discharge when he returned home to work on the family farm. Andy was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Waymart and was a devout Catholic. He was also a 70-year member of the Waymart American Legion Post 889.
A self-taught musician, Andy shared his love of music throughout the community his entire life. He played fiddle for more than 45 years with the Rhythm Valley Boys and embraced his role as a music instructor for young and old alike. In 1978, Andy was one of the founding members of The Old Time Fiddlers, which held a special place in his heart. He also enjoyed playing music with his family band, Cavage Family Bluegrass.
Andy was a heavy equipment operator and instructor for several years before a longstanding career as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.
A jack of all trades and master of all, Andy was also a private pilot. He was talented craftsman, and an avid outdoorsman. He truly loved life and all the people he met along the way. Andy found joy in sharing his experiences with others and had a natural ability to draw others in with his loving kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Andy is also survived by three children: Andrew Cavage Jr. and his wife Michele of Steene, Kathleen Stark and her husband Phillip of North Rose, NY, and Loretta Rovinski and her husband Thomas of Pittston Twp; six grandchildren: Andrew Cavage III, Maylene Cavage, Jennifer Stults, Bryan Cavage, Philip Stark, and David Stark; a brother, Anthony Cavage; and a sister, Joan Seibert.
Andy was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas A. Cavage in 2020; a sister, Mary Valeski; and brothers, Joseph, Valentine “Popsie”, and Louis.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 7, 2022 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 242 Carbondale Road, Waymart, PA. All attending are asked to go directly to the church.
Friends and family may visit on Sunday, February 6, 2022 from 2-4 PM at the Jenkins-Howell Funeral Home, Inc. Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Andy's memory to St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
Interment with military honors will be in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners in the spring.
