Roy G. Hunter, 81, of Waymart died Friday evening, December 23, 2016 at Wayne Memorial Hospital after an illness. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary (Dougher) McDonald Hunter.
Born May 27, 1935 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Gordon H. & Grace (Glosenger) Hunter.
Roy attended the Benjamin Franklin High School. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was a member of the Waymart American Legion Post 889, the VFW Post 4206 in Florida, and former Lieutenant of the National Guard. Roy retired from Farview State Hospital as a Psychiatric Security Guard, where he was also a former Chief Steward of AFSCME Union #2502. After retirement he ran a small used car business in Waymart and was a carpenter and builder for most of his life. He was a member of the Waymart Volunteer Fire Company, Station 75.
He is also survived by three children: Cindy Keen and her husband Gary of Waymart, Randy Hunter of Carbondale, and Mary McDonald Ballard of Waymart; grandchildren: Jessica Keen Patten, Kelly Keen Holevinski, Joseph Keen, Jason, Andrew, and Shawn Hunter, William, and Donald Ballard; Kristina Yankauskas-Yates, and Timothy Carson; a sister, Edna Pritchard and her husband Robert of Florida; a brother, Gordon A. Hunter and his wife Maris of California; great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Howard and James Hunter, sisters, Thelma Miller, Beverley Hunter, daughter Eileen McDonald Carson, and first wife Loretta Walsh.
The family thanks the staff at Wayne Woodlands Manor and also the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital for their dedicated and compassionate care during his several illnesses.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made in Roy's memory to The Waymart American Legion Post 889, PO Box 395 Waymart, PA 18472.
Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
